The original date for the event in April was cancelled due to Storm Kathleen, but I believe riding in the wind would have been a better option than racing in torrential rain with flooded roads like it was on Saturday.
The forecast predicted right and the rain didn’t stop until late morning. 56 riders had entered the Men’s race but only 39 started after the rider briefing which was held inside the changing rooms of the HQ..obviously Heather Bamforth Chief Commissaire didn’t want to get wet.
The 3 mile course was marshalled with club volunteers and BC Accredited Marshalls..Lead cars Eddie O’BRIEN and Aaron Green. Representing the club was Mike Rimmer who gave it go with a much improved performance than last year. The race was soon split apart in the wet conditions and the ultimate winner was David Parkin from a small breakaway group. The Women’s event had 16 starters and had slightly better conditions. The winner was Lilly Brindle in a sprint finish and then by a miracle the rain stopped and the sun came out.
My thanks go to Allan Taylor (Admin), Wendy Scott (signing on) Ken Davies(refreshments) and all the club members who kindly gave up their morning to stand at a junction with a red flag. Without your support the event wouldn’t take place…it’s very much appreciated. Congratulations to the prize winners, officials, and all who took part and to make the event a success also the sponsors for contribution of the prizes.
Thanks again for your support and hopefully better weather next year.
