The 5th Ben Gautrey Challenge ride took place last Sunday with routes of 30k or 50k to choose from. The club was well represented with over 30 riders taking part.

The ride started from Meols Hall in Churchtown, where the registration and signing on took place. The event was so popular the organisation ran out of frame numbers. The club made a donation of £150 to the cause and for entry for the Juniors (wearing their club jerseys with the Ben Gautrey logo) with adult members paying on the day.

Ben Gautrey Foundation have previously donated a Kuota race bike which on the day Dan Salcedo was riding. Dan’s parents Maria and Peter were also taking part along with other families. Prior to the Grand Depart Ian Bailey was on hand to photograph the occasion.

Most riders opted for the 50k route which was on the open roads towards Burscough and Parbold. Worthy of mention is Joseph Cosgrove who at 9 years managed to ride up Stoney Lane just behind his Dad, no mean feat for anyone who knows the climb. The pace was leisurely resulting in the club staying together. An unscheduled cafe stop at the Dive Centre proved to be be too busy so on we went to the regular cafe (Cedar Farm) just off the route where we refreshed ourselves in the sunshine. I have to say the carrot cake went down a treat….

Afterwards we rejoined the route back via Croston/Rufford/Banks to Meols Hall arriving back around 1pm. A wonderful morning out, a friendly ride with lots of banter and amusement whilst raising money for a great cause, an annual event the club is happy to support on local roads.
