Friday 18 April saw Peter Gawthorne, Steve Ginty, Allan Taylor and Will White making an early (7.30.am) start from Ainsdale Post Office control on the road to Settle. Missing from the group was Mark Davies aka The Iron Man – where are you Mark? – who has not been seen on his bike for some time.
The morning was bright and sunny but with a cool breeze and this was to set the pattern for the rest of the day. Taking the route through Preston as opposed to the Woodplumpton option the group where joined by Lee Hunt and Dave Walker – making a come back to the Audax world again.
First control at Chipping with 58km completed was reached just after 10.00.am. On over Little Bowland, Dunsop Bridge and Slaidburn. Left at the monument in Slaidburn to start the climbs of Lamb Fell and Tatham Fell. Right in Bentham and on to Settle for lunch after 110km
A brief stop at Settle station – as a (diesel) train arrived we were told by the Station Master that there was not enough room on the train for all the bikes – so back on the bikes.
Substituing Clitheroe for the Waddington control allowed some additional climbing through Whalley and via York, Ramsgreave, Mellor and Samelsbury Bottoms – the climbing created a split in the group exploited by Will to make the only off route detour of the day.
Back to Ainsdale by 6.00.pm – a Good Friday day out
