On yer Bike – Visiter Column – Article 80

Good morning cycle buddies all. I managed to get out last week in the brilliantlya-view-from-part-way-up-hunters-hill-looking-west-copy warm sunshine to find many of you had taken the opportunity to engage in cycling too! It’s so heart-warming to see groups of people and families out enjoying themselves navigating in and around their local areas. Some looked to be using the bike as an alternative to driving the car. To the park, to the beach, to the swimming pool or just riding for pleasure it all counts to make travelling by cycle a healthy and sustainable activity that makes us happy.

This week I am saddened by the talk of banning cycles on the Merseyrail network due to a single incident that saw an elderly man pushed over by the actions of one individual with a bike on a busy train. Where was the guard? I always thought the guard was in charge of the train ever since reading Thomas the Tank when I was smaller? Did anyone get the attention of the guard who has the authority on the train to ensure safe passage no! Instead we have a series of pointless discussions about whether cycles should be allowed on the train fortunately it’s up to the guard on the train in question as to whether he wishes to convey the cycle or not.

Other news sees the final Southport CC time trail with the 10 Mile TT trophy still not secured by any rider. Meanwhile Southport’s Daniel and Joe Cosgrove have walked away with the North West youth rider titles for their respective categories great work boys but what next? Locally I am still awaiting more results from Southport Youth riders but it looks like another fantastic season under the leadership of club secretary Ken Beck for Southport CC in this an Olympic year. Again

if you live local and are keen to ride yourself onto the cycling podium in Tokyo in 2020 then get yourselves down to Southport CC where the hard work and fun times begin!

Another date for your diary is the next Sefton & District Classic Bicycle Group’s cycle jumble that is to be held on 15th October 2016 from 12 noon until 3pm. There is no charge or registration just turn up on the day!
